When learning how to play chess, understanding how the chess board should be set up and what the different pieces mean is the first step that should be taken. No matter whether one owns a cheap chess board or an expensive chess board, the chess pieces will mean the same thing. Chess boards can be bought nearly anywhere. After one is purchased, the individual can start learning how to set it up.

•	A chess board is designed with 64 squares of two alternate colors. There are 32 game pieces total and each player gets 16 of them for their team. Setting up a chess board begins with knowing where each chess piece is placed. Because of the chess pieces that must stay upright, a chess board should be placed on a hard and flat surface such as a table or a floor. There are two opponents in a chess match. One opponent should sit on either side of the chess board, facing each other. The chess board must be positioned so that a light colored square on the corner of each players’ side of the chess board.

•	Chess boards have two different colored squares. The lighter squares and game pieces are known as the white team, no matter if they are a completely different color. The darker squares on the chess board, along with its corresponding pieces, is always known as the black team. The white team will always make the first move when beginning a game. There are three types of rows on chess boards. The rows that go across the chess board horizontally are called ranks. There are eight squares in a rank. The rows that run lengthwise up and down the chess board is called files. Lastly, the rows that go in a diagonal direction are called diagonals. There are five different chess pieces that can move around the chess boards in different ways. Knowing how each chess piece can move is very important when it comes to learning how to play chess.

•	The five chess pieces are called pawns, rooks, knights, bishops, kings and queens. Each player gets eight pawns, two bishops, two rooks, two knights, one queen, and one king for their side of the chess board. The rank closest to each player is set with the queen in one middle square and the king in the other. The queen should be placed on the light colored middle square and the king on the dark colored one. Each player’s side of the chess board should be a mirror image of the other side. The two bishops are placed in the same row on the chess board as the king and queen, with one on either side of them. The two knights are then placed on either side of the bishops. In the same rank, the two rooks are set up so that one is in each back corner of the chess board. All eight pawns are placed in the rank directly in front of the other chess pieces. Since each pawn has the same value, it does not matter which of the pawns is placed in which square.

Once someone knows how to set up a chess board, they can begin learning the moves and abilities of the chess pieces. Understanding the layouts of a chess board must happen before an individual begins to play chess.

There are certain chess tactics that should be used in an average chess game. Knowing skillful chess tactics and strategies is important when one is trying to improve their chess game. Chess tactics are considered to be a series of plays that equal a sequence. A good chess tactic will work to capture the opponent’s chess pieces as well as limit his options of movement. A successful chess tactic results in a gain for the player while an unsuccessful one results in a gain for his opponent. Chess tactics are used for twisting an opponent’s mistake and using them for the individual’s advantage. Chess games can be won or lost depending on the chess tactics that are used.

•	There is a simple chess tactic that is the staple behind the game of chess. This chess tactic involves the capture of the opponent’s chess pieces. Chess games are won by using chess tactics to get the opponent’s king piece in check mate. This means the piece is unable to make anymore moves and the opposing team has it cornered. The chess tactic that is commonly used to achieve this is capturing the opponent’s chess pieces so that the king is alone of the board. Since the king has limited movement, trapping it after the defense is gone will not be difficult.

•	A chess tactic known as the fork involves one chess piece attacking multiple pieces of the opponent at once. This move is commonly done by the knight, who has the power to move in an L shape and jump over other chess pieces. The knight is the only chess piece that is able to make the jump. Bishops, rooks and the queen are the only pieces that are able to make a move known as the skewer. A chess tactic involving a skewer is done by attacking a valuable chess piece of the opponents. The valuable chess piece than has to move, resulting in it being captured. Skewers rely on the chess tactic of leaving behind pieces like pawns, since they are not worth as much as other pieces and have limited movement. This chess tactic relies on protecting the valuable pieces.

•	Chess tactics known as pins are also very common to use in a chess game. Pins work by cornering the opponent’s chess pieces in a way so that they have limited movement. This is achieved by attacking the opponent’s chess piece is a way that any movement by it will cause the capture of a valuable piece. Like skewers, pins are chess tactics that can only be performed by bishops, rooks, and the queen.

By using some basic chess tactics, an individual can begin the process of becoming a skilled chess player. Chess tactics get more complicated as an individual’s skill level rises, but these chess tactics are still at the core of more advanced chess tactics.

When playing a chess game, the chances of winning increase depending on the moves that a player makes using the chess pieces. Chess games can be complicated matches that last a long time or quick simple ones. Some people are so experienced at chess games that they can spot the right chess move immediately depending on the play and look of the chess board. Others may need help deciding which moves are good ideas in a chess game.

•	Since playing a chess game is based almost entirely on strategy, it is important to know which chess move is right for which play. Chess games are won or lost due to the moves of each chess piece that the player controls. While learning the basics of a chess game and setting up the chess board is the basic things that should be learned first, learning which moves work best in a chess game is a close second. One move can make or break a chess game. There are several ways to make smart moves in chess games.

•	One important rule is that the player should constantly keep their eyes on the chess game. Any distractions could result in the individual missing a crucial play. It is just as important for the player to look after their own pieces in a chess game as it is for that player to watch closely their opponent’s chess pieces. Sometimes, the chance to make a good chess move will be lost because the player was looking around in other places and thinking more about distractions than the chess game.

•	One should always be a step ahead of their opponent by silently planning each possible move that they can make next in the chess game. This could include going over where the individual’s chess pieces can move to and planning from there, or seeing what plays are available to the opponent and planning what move to make for each possible option. The more moves ahead that one can plan to do in a chess game, the better. Being prepared for a large variety of moves is important when playing any game of strategy, particularly a chess game.

•	Defense moves in a chess game are important to know, as well as offense moves. While some of a chess game depends on the individual’s plan of attack, another half of it will depend on the opponent’s move. Knowing how to go on the defense in a chess game will give a player a great advantage. It’s also important to remember that there are times that it may be to one’s benefit to sacrifice a chess piece to complete a larger plan. This is true cases of weak pieces like pawns or a strong piece like the queen.

The best way to play a chess game is to be ready to experiment with new moves. Sometimes, developing a new style will lead to a strong new strategy for chess games.

If one wishes to play the game of chess on their computer, they might want to consider searching for a chess download on the Internet. Chess downloads are available from a variety of websites. Finding the right chess download depends on the individual’s preferences when it comes to playing chess.

•	Unlike playing chess online, a chess download will usually be playable with no Internet access. A download is a file that is copied from the Internet into the hard drive of an individual’s computer. Usually a chess download is available on specific chess websites. Once the file is downloaded, the chess download is available for play on a person’s computer. Different chess downloads offer different features. Some chess downloads are very advanced and offer the player a chance to create their own chess playing character to use in chess games. Other chess downloads will be simple versions that offer basic chess games.

•	The more advanced the chess download is, the more likely it is that there may be a fee involved in obtaining the chess download. There are many chess downloads available online that can be found by doing a simple Internet search. If one is not willing to pay for their chess downloads then they should specify that in the search by looking only for free chess downloads instead of chess downloads. A chess download that charges may request one fee up front while other chess downloads will have a monthly costs that must be paid.

•	A chess download is a good way for someone who enjoys chess to have an option to play it whenever they are near their computer. Instead of searching for an opponent or setting up a chess board, an individual can simply turn on their computer and play against it. Since the chess download is on the computer, there is not way for an individual to cheat or bend the rules. There may be an option to time the game or to choose the skill level of the individual. Some chess downloads allow individuals to play against real people from all over the world. That kind of chess download would require Internet access due to the nature of it.

Any individual who likes the game of chess may want to find a chess download online. However, taking precautions before downloading anything to one’s computer is important. Some downloads, even games like chess downloads, contain viruses. Once these downloads are on the computer, the computer catches the virus. Viruses can cause computers to crash completely.

Chess is a board game that is played between two players with a chess board. The chessboard is square-shaped and contains 64 squares arranged on an 8 by 8 grid. Each player during a chess match starts with sixteen different pieces. Each player has one king and queen, two rooks, knights, and bishops, and eight pawns. Every unique piece on a chess board has unique ways of traveling up and down the chessboard. Both player in a game of chess has the goal of using the pieces to checkmate the opponent’s king. This means that the king is under attack, and there is no possible move that will deem the king safe from the attack. If a king is in check, it means it is being attacked, but there is a move that will keep it safe, either by moving the king or another piece to block the attack.

When the internet became a popular forum for chess fanatics to exchange information and play correspondence chess games, free chess games and free chess downloads began to take shape. One of the most popular chess computer engines to emerge is entitled Chessmaster. The series of games have appeared on many video game console and PC platforms. As the internet entered into an advanced, downloadable content became extremely popular and a free chess download became popular in the Chessmaster series. While the download was free, it was only for a trial version, which was available for an upgrade to the full version by paying a sum of money.

Many chess advocates believe that a free chess download for playing the popular game should be standard. In the early stages of internet technology, the first chess servers, while sparse in players and content, were absolutely free. It was called “chess3″, and when the popularity of it rose, it became a commercial product for sale, which angered many internet chess enthusiasts.
It was not long before the internet became populated by hundreds of free chess services from large companies such as Yahoo!, to smaller, more obscure websites like Chess Boss, offering a quick and free chess download.

Free chess has always been, by right, free on one of the earliest servers to emerge on the internet chess scene– Free Internet Chess Server. This was a chess server offering free chess after Chess3 went commercial. The creators of Chess3 were unhappy with this decision, and decided to offer its old users the opportunity to continue to enjoy free chess. Their tagline is even “We do it for the game, not the money.” It is now home to over 300,000 registered users. It offers simple free chess interfaces in addition to a more advanced and graphically-appealing free chess download interface. Although chess is always free on their servers, they do offer people to donate to help support the site.

As long as chess players continue to have passion for the game and as long as the internet exists, there will always be free online communities where ordinary chess players and chess masters can test their skills with each other.

If a king is in check, it means it is being attacked, but there is a move that will keep it safe, either by moving the king or another piece to block the attack.

In the last few centuries, chess has become the most popular board game in the world. Due to its popularity, there have been numerous ways invented to play it. Variations of the standard chess game have been developed that include different rules and board structures. Also, chess has also been played remotely between two people who live far away from each other called correspondence chess. This has been a practice for several hundred years. All of these reasons is a testament to how chess has become such a staple in modern society.
Free Chess Online:

The first correspondence chess games were played by snail mail and the games would take weeks to complete. At most, each player may make one or two moves a week. It was not long before players began playing over the phone. Finally, with the emergence of the internet, new and revolutionary ways have been made with chess online. In recent years, ways to play chess online has quickly evolved.

First, as the internet was in its infancy, chess servers were created in the 1970s. These servers were primitive by today’s standards, but the provided an almost instantaneous way to play chess online through correspondence. The first free chess online server was called “chess3″ and allowed users to make many moves a day with remote players and was even able to handle several games at once for its players. Although chess3 allowed users to complete a game in a day, this was not always the case due to technology limitations.

Eventually, free chess online was played via email in the 1980s as the technology began to rapidly increase in popularity. Similar to snail mail correspondence chess, email chess online allowed users to send mail to each other. It was a whole lot quicker and convenient then snail mail chess, but again, due to limitations in technology and the relatively small number of people that had access to email, it was not widely used.

As the internet took off in the 1990s, websites began offering online chess via free applications on their website. This allowed chess players to compete on a fully visual chess board instantaneously with remote players. Today, there are dozens of free chess online servers across the internet and allow ranked games with comparable players in skill.

The modern game of chess is a board game that is played between two players with a chess board.

Chess strategies for each piece can be easily broken down. But since chess is a very dynamic game, one must understand that the role of each piece may change, depending on how late the stage of the game is. For example, the pawn is the most dynamic piece on the chess board. Not only does its moves change depending on what position it is in, they are the only piece that may be promoted and have very specific capturing rules. The following is a basic overview of each piece’s chess strategy:

Pawns:
Pawns are perhaps the weakest and least important in a chess game, though the chess strategy of a pawn drastically becomes vital during the endgame. For instance, a ‘passed pawn’, one which cannot be stopped by another opponent piece has a likelihood of being promoted and will pose a valiant threat to an opponent. Pawns often decide the game as it comes to a close.

Knights:
Knights are most useful when they are placed in holes in the opponent’s defense. Since they can easily be attacked and chased away by pawns, they are primarily focused on exposing holes in an opponent’s line. Usually, a knight that is on the fifth square can be a valuable asset. If a knight is on the sixth rank, its value goes up even further, giving almost the same amount of power as that of a rook. Also, it is important to place the knight toward the center of the board so that it can control more squares (as the saying goes, “A knight on the rim is dim.”)

Bishop:
The bishop is a unique piece because it always remains on the colored square from which it started on for the entire duration of the chess match. It is a good chess strategy to use the long range capabilities of the bishop, especially in the endgame. In the endgame, chess strategies for a player with a bishop gives him or her an advantage over a player with a knight.

Rooks:
Rooks are useful in high-rank squares because they can take out opponent pawns if they are not properly defended by other pieces. As it states in many chess strategies, an piece behind a pawn is more powerful than in front of it. The rook is considered a more powerful piece than the bishop and knight because of its greater ability to checkmate a lone king.

Queen:
The most powerful piece, as they can move any distance in any direction, they are capable of threatening an opponent’s king at any sport on the board. It is best to develop a queen strategy after bishops and knights have been positioned.

King:
The king is often best protected in the middle game when it is behind a set of pawns. It is a common chess strategy to allow an “escape square” for a king so that it does not get trapped by an approaching rook.
